Five questions for Varla Jean Merman, star of Girls Will Be Girls and its upcoming sequel, who returns to P-town with her latest solo show, Topping Myself.
DLNQNT: If you had your own fragrance, what would it be called and what would it smell like? Varla Jean Merman: Mayonnaise. Oil and eggs.
What’s the most valuable advice your drag mother ever gave you? VJM: Celebrate the new girls. Better to be revered than be bitter.
If you threw up right now, what would probably come out? VJM: Mayonnaise.
Which celebrity do you look most like — as a lady and as a boy? VJM: John Lithgow in The World According to Garp… and John Lithgow.
Selflessly plug something that you have nothing to do with. VJM: MAC Cleanse Off Oil makeup remover. Put on and merely rinse your face with water to remove makeup. No rubbing! I remember doing drag in the early ’90s and having residual eyeliner on for three weeks. It’s the best to thing to happen to drag since duct tape!
Varla Jean Merman stars in Topping Myself, through Sept. 1, at Provincetown’s The Art House with pianist Gerald Goode. Find Varla on Facebook, Twitter, and her website.
